Home learning expectations
Reading In year 5/6 it is expected that children select and read books of their own choice. The children are expected to take part in 20 minutes of at home reading everyday. This could be: reading independently; reading to a sibling, parent or other family member; or being read too by someone else. Have a look at the links below if you are stuck for ideas about what to read, or send me a note and I help you come up with some options. Mathematics
In year 5/6 students are expected to know all of their basic facts and to learn all of their timestables. Please practice these at home. Click on the links below to practice these. |
In addtion you can also practice your basic facts by printing and completing the following basic facts sheets.
Home learning project
Students can complete a home learning project about something that they are interested in to share with the class. These projects are independent of other class activities, but need to be of a very high quality and follow the inquiry cycle.
Inquiry cycle: 1. Come up with a topic/idea/concept that you are interested in, and explore that area. Record your exploration in your own words, picture and diagrams etc., using a method of your choice (e.g. in your homework book, on a large mindmap, in a word document or powerpoint). 2. From you research come up with 5 original "I wonder..." questions that that will guide your research. 3.) Complete some research and/or an experiment to answer your questions. 4.) Organise you ideas to ensure you have answered your questions? Do you need to do more research? 5.) Do you have more questions? (If you have record them, because coming up with lots of new questions shows that you are a true inquirer! Great Job!!!) |
Examples of inquiry topics to get you started:How come, when you bend over, your eyes don’t fall out?
Do trees ever stop growing? Why do we scream when we are scared? Questions to ask:Ask yourself:
What have I been doing to find out about this? What have been some of the most effective resources? How might I go about organizing this information? If I wanted to get another point of view about this – what should I do next? What will I need to think about before I get started on this? How am I feeling about what I have learned/done so far? How are my ideas about this changing? What has been the thing that has most changed my thinking? Why? What am I noticing about the way I am thinking? What kind of thinking will I need to do to achieve this? |
