Room 22 goes to the Opera!
As this term is all about performance, we are going to use the first 3 weeks of term 3 to explore the exciting and engaging world of Opera. To do this we will be taking part in a LEARNZ virtual field trip to the set of Madam Butterfly, which is being performed here in Christchurch.
We will be reading and writing about different aspects of Opera, and using our creativity and thinking skills to demonstrate our learning.

So far this term we have been doing some amazing learning.
We had a great time taking part in an audioconference with Andrew the LEARNZ teacher and experts Steve and James.
Summary of our audioconference:
LEARNZ Audioconference Summary Sheet for Classes Field Trip Name: Opera Virtual Field Trip School/Class: St Albans School Room 22 Day/Date/Time: Tuesday 21st July, 9.30 Topics: Going to the Opera Location: Chch Heritage Hotel Guest Experts: James and Steve Three surprising facts we learnt today:
James: to represent a story and make people emotional. 2. How many Operatic performances have you been involved in? James - 30ish over the years 3. What is your favourite Opera? Steve - Cinderdella (La Cenerentola in Italian!) James - Tosca and Peter Grimes 4. Why did you join the opera? Steve - because he loved the theatre. It makes him proud and excited. He liked seeing the audience go WOW. He liked making the theatre look like magic using different sets and costumes. It is hard to get into. You can do courses at University in Music, and the drama school do courses for technicians and singers. 5. What is the main song in an opera? When does it happen? The aria , when singers sing by themselves about something important. They are hard songs to sing and you need to train lots to perform them. 6. Do you get to meet lots of famous performance? Yes, you meet people like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (http://damekiritekanawa.com/) and Sigourney Weaver (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigourney_Weaver). The coolest part though is not just meeting famous people, but getting to work with them and learn from them. 7. How much time do you spend practising before the performance? A LOT! You need to be well prepared to be in an opera. The songs can be complicated so you have to practice them lots. James said, you have to know all the songs off by heart before the first rehearsal. Then you spend about 4-5 weeks rehearsing them. 8.What is the most exciting thing about being part in the Opera? The most exciting thing is being involved in it, as well as making friends with lots of different people and being part of the team. Meeting people can open doors to lots of different opportunities. It is also really cool to see what people are doing and wonder “Wow, how did they do that?” 9. What is the thing you have been most proud of in your career with Operatic performances? Steve: Creating Opera. Making an opera a reality for the audience. James: That he is still doing it, even though he had to go overseas to study, to live and to learn. 10. Where will you perform next? Steve: Auckland - Messiah (in the Auckland Town Hall) and then Tosca. Our comments about the audioconference experience The best part of being in an audioconference is... “ Talking to all the other people” Will “ Learning from a performer about their experiences in the Opera” Catherine “ Getting your own questions answered” Leia “ That it is on the internet and everyone can listen” Lilly |

THE MAZE RUNNER
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas can remember is his name.Thomas rose to a whole new world greeted by bands and bands of boys.
The Maze is a dark, scary, dangerous and treacherous place.Filled with blood hungry grievers (giant robotic spiders) and 100ft stone walls with old loose vines swinging from the blood stained walls.
The Maze has only one way out! Will Thomas find the way and be the saviour to all the Gladers?
The Maze Runner is a great book for people who like action, adventure, mystery and intensity. I give this book a 5/5 ***** star rating, because the author put a really good picture in my head and included heaps of detail.

Opal Plumstead
My book character is Opal Plumstead by Jacqueline Wilson. Opal is a fourteen year old poor girl which has a scholarship to St Margaret’s School and she is determined to be one of the first girls to go to university. Opal has a best friend called Olivia. In the 1914s women didn’t have jobs. Instead they stayed at home and did all the cooking and cleaning. Opal’s father, Ernest worked at the post office Ernest wrote books as his hobby. Ernest would write books and then send them to a publishing company. Ernest had always had his books rejected. One day he lies about getting a book published so that his family is happy. The next day Ernest goes to the city to supposedly meet the publishers. Because he said he got money he stole money from the bank. Opal has a sister called Cassie and a mother. Opal’s mother has always liked Cassie better than Opal. One day they find out that Ernest stole money from the bank and Ernest gets arrested. Because they have no money Opal has to give up her scholarship and work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory. At the Fairy Glen sweet factory her boss Mrs Roberts is a suffragette. In the old days women weren’t allowed to vote. Some Women thought that Women should be able to vote. Did you know that New Zealand was one of the first countries that let women vote? On our 10 dollar note there is a picture of Kate Shepherd which was a suffragette.
Meanwhile Cassie is dating a middle aged man called Mr. Evandale. Mr Evandale is thirty four years old. Cassie is only eighteen years old. Opal’s mother doesn’t approve of Cassie dating a middle aged man. To cover it up Cassie is telling her mother that she is dating Philip the son of Madame Alouette which Cassie is her apprentice. Opal is working in a part of the factory she doesn’t like. One of the bullies is Patty. Patty got into a fight with Opal one day so Mrs Roberts put Opal into the department where the girls paint the boxes. Opal is very happy there. Opal changes the box cover to fairies instead of the traditional design. Mrs Roberts likes it very much that she pays Opal more money to do the fairy design. One day Opal goes to one of the suffragette meetings and becomes a suffragette. After the meeting Opal meets a suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. After Opal meets Emmeline Pankhurst Opal goes to Mrs Robert’s house. After that Opal regularly went to the suffragette meetings and Mrs Robert’s house. One time when Opal went to Mrs Robert’s house Opal met Mrs Robert’s son Morgan. Morgan and Opal talked a lot and then fell in love. Mrs Roberts did not approve of Morgan and Opal but they still loved each other. But that wasn’t all the first world war was coming up and Morgan signed up to go to war. Meanwhile Cassie ran away to Mr. Evandale’s house to live there. After a month of training to go to war Morgan takes Opal on their last date. The war was going well Morgan was alive until he got shot by the sniper. Once Opal found out Mrs Roberts and Opal were devastated. Meanwhile Cassie had her first baby. Mrs Roberts was closing the factory so she paid for Opal to go to art school. At art school Opal met a boy called Sam. They might fall in love but their love won’t be as strong as Morgan and Opal’s love for each other. Opal’s dad got out of prison after one year of hard labour. This story is a tragic story. Opal Plumstead is Jacqueline Wilson’s 100th book! This is the longest book Jacqueline Wilson has ever wrote. I think this story is one of the most touching stories I have ever read. This should be a book everyone should read at one point in their life.
